You don’t want to think that a fire can occur in your home. However, there are many precautions you can take to help prevent this dangerous possibility. Although they sound simple, many families overlook these rules that can reduce your risk.
• Don’t overload your electrical circuits.
• Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children. • Don’t smoke in bed.
• Don’t store oil or grease-soaked rags.
• Keep combustibles far from heat sources.
If Fire Strikes
If a fire occurs in your home, make sure your entire family remembers the following information.
SMOKE IS BLACK:
When there is thick smoke, you can hardly see the flames. This may cause disorientation so you must know how to escape your home in the dark.
THE HEAT IS INTENSE:
At knee height, the temperature may be about 90 degrees. At shoulder height, a burning fire can be as hot as 690 degrees. When escaping, stay as close to the floor as possible in a crawling position.
GATHER THE CHILDREN AND THE
DISABLED AND GET OUT:
When fire strikes, you have as little as one to two minutes to escape. Do not waste time calling the fire department. You can do this after you are out of the home.
PREARRANGE A MEETING SPOT:
This location should be a place that is safely away from the structure of your home where every family member knows to go immediately after escaping. When everyone is accounted for, go to a neighbor’s home and call the fire department. If possible, you can tell a responsible family member who has already been accounted for, to call the fire department and return immediately to the meeting place.
DON’T TRY TO FIGHT THE FIRE:
Let the firefighters do their job. Just get out of the way of danger.
